"I went to see The Genius [Ray Charles] and I said, 'What am I going to do? Fats plays in this key, Jerry Lee's never heard of that key.' And he said, 'I can play it in any damn key you want. Just get me the f#@k outta here.'" - Paul Shaffer on trying to coordinate the performance of the song "Jambalaya"

Fats & Friends DVD Review

By Jude Clement

In 1986, Cinemax brought together three Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame piano virtuosos for the first time on the same stage: Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Ray Charles. According to musical director Paul Shaffer (The Late Show), the concert was nothing less than a "rock 'n' roll piano summit." Taped onstage at New Orleans' Storyville nightclub on a sweltering summer night, this historic event is now on DVD.

The special is divided into five sections. Domino is up first, performing seven songs with his crackerjack band. Be on the lookout for his gold piano-shaped ring that is nearly the size of the piano itself.

Lewis is next, performing three songs with guest Ron Wood (the Rolling Stones). Lewis plays with an almost religious fervor, practically working the crowd into ecstasy, especially when he climbs onto the piano to play with his feet.

While preparing for the next set, Shaffer and Wood perform "A Certain Girl." Charles then joins them for a pair of songs.

Finally, all three piano legends come together to perform a four-song set, including "The Lewis Boogie," "Low Down Dog," "Jambalaya," and "Swanee River Rock."

As performers, the three came to prominence during roughly the same time period. Fats & Friends points out, however, that they each have their own unique style. Domino's playing is laid back but muscular. The self-taught Lewis is a perfect example of energetic rockabilly playing. Charles' effortless style makes it look easy.

Video and Audio

Fats & Friends looks and sounds just as you'd expect from a concert videotaped on location in the mid-'80s. The video isn't exactly crisp, and the crowd noise in the final jam session seems to waver, but these are minor problems.

Extras

Included as an extra is "Paul Shaffer Interview & Never-Before-Seen Rehearsal Footage" (51:07). Shaffer, the concert's musical director, is seen in new interview footage interspersed with chunks of rehearsal footage. Shaffer provides much insight on working with these piano legends. The rehearsal footage is also interesting, but because it mostly includes the performers and Shaffer working out the details of the show, there isn't much actual music.

Summary

If you are a fan of classic '50s and '60s rock, then don't miss Fats & Friends. It brings together three of our national treasures into one memorable concert.
