Acorn Media announces the October 4, 2005, DVD release of Butterflies, Series 2, starring Wendy Craig (The Forsyte Saga) and Geoffrey Palmer (As Time Goes By). Featuring eight episodes, this distinctive BBC series, both funny and poignant, revolves around a housewife frustrated by life with her detached husband and glib sons, and by her own dismal failure to master even the boring and repetitive tasks at hand. As a wealthy and handsome paramour pursues her, she guiltily flits from her real life to this exciting distraction like a butterfly aware that its time is running out. Created by prolific Britcom writer Carla Lane (The Liver Birds, Bread). The DVD set includes the show's 1979 Christmas special. DVD special features include a Carla Lane biography and cast filmographies. Acorn's DVD 2-disc set has a running time of 238 minutes and is priced at $29.99 SRP. Pre-book date is September 6.
In 1979, a U.S. version of Butterflies was piloted on NBC, starring actress Jennifer Warren, and directed by James Burrows (Will & Grace). Although the series was co-scripted by Carla Lane, it's reported that the writer was hugely disappointed with the project and particularly displeased with changes that left out a good deal of the subtlety noticeable in the original version. The NBC pilot failed to gain the series a full broadcast deal.
