Diff'rent Strokes became a pop culture phenomenon after its debut in 1978, lasting eight seasons, in large part because of Gary Coleman. Coleman was a two-time Young Artist Award Winner (1981 Best Young Comedian, 1983 Best Young Actor in a Comedy Series), whose charm and timing were flawless and whose signature "Whatchoo talkin' 'bout, Willis?" became a national catchphrase.
Season two, which was not afraid to tackle tough issues such as bigotry, adoption, death and gang violence, used a unique combination of laughs and serious drama to attract a wide variety of guest stars including Muhammad Ali, Meadowlark Lemon, Reggie Jackson and Molly Ringwald. The second season also saw the departure of Ms. Garrett and the arrival of the new housekeeper, Adelaide Brubaker (Nedra Volz), ultimately spawning the popular spin-off series The Facts of Life.
The plotline of Diff'rent Strokes centers around wealthy widower Phillip Drummond (Conrad Bain), whose life is turned upside down when he adopts two orphans after promising their dying mother he would take care of her sons. Eight-year-old Arnold, his twelve year old brother Willis and their new sister Kimberly (Dana Plato) learn to love and accept each other with the guidance of their father and housekeeper Mrs. Garrett (Charlotte Rae).
