CULVER CITY, CALIF. (June 26, 2006) - One of the most acclaimed dramas of the '70s makes its DVD debut when Sony Pictures Home Entertainment presents Family: The Complete First and Second Seasons on September 5. The collection of 28 episodes will be available in a six-disc boxed set and priced at $49.95 SLP.
Family premiered as an ABC mid-season replacement on March 9, 1976, and immediately captured the attention of critics and viewers. From the powerhouse producing duo of Aaron Spelling (TV's "Charlie's Angels," "Melrose Place," "Charmed") and Leonard Goldberg (Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, Double Jeopardy), the series was nominated for 17 Emmys (winning four) and seven Golden Globes® over the course of its five-season, 86-episode run. In addition, Glenn Jordan was honored by the Director's Guild of America for "Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Dramatic Series" in 1977.
The highly-praised cast of Family includes Emmy-nominee Meredith Baxter (TV's "Family Ties," "A Woman Scorned: The Betty Broderick Story"), two-time Emmy-winner and Golden Globe nominee Kristie McNichol (Little Darlings, TV's "Empty Nest"), Emmy-nominee James Broderick (Dog Day Afternoon), Tony and Emmy Award-winner Sada Thompson (Pollock), Emmy-winner Gary Frank (The Distinguished Gentlemen, Vic), Season Hubley (Children of the Corn V, TV's "Elvis"), and Willie Aames (TV's "Eight is Enough," "Charles in Charge").
Family depicts the trials and tribulations, joyous occasions and heartbreaking moments of the Lawrence family: attorney father Doug (Broderick), housewife, student and musician Kate (Thompson), eldest daughter Nancy (Baxter), teenage son Willie (Frank) and adolescent daughter Buddy (McNichol). The series broke new ground with its storylines, touching upon topics such as child and spousal abuse, teenage drinking and extramarital affairs as well as the more mundane, but memorable, moments audiences everywhere could relate to: family fights, falling in love, illness, school, new jobs and, most of all, loving each other.
Many veteran and up-and-coming performers guest starred in the series first and second seasons, including Academy Award®-winners Helen Hunt and Tommy Lee Jones, Academy Award-nominees James Woods (Salvador, Ghosts of Mississippi) and Mildred Natwick (The Truth About Harry, Barefoot in the Park), Tony Award-winner Elizabeth Ashley (The Carpetbaggers), Sheree North (How to Be Very, Very Popular), Gene Francis (TV's "General Hospital"), Howard Hesseman (TV's "WKRP in Cincinnati"), Vic Tayback (TV's "Alice"), and Kim Richards (Escape to Witch Mountain, Tuff Turf).
