THE FLYING NUN:
THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON
Two-Time Academy Award®-Winner Stars in All 26 Episodes in a Four-Disc Set on DVD August 15
Culver City, CA (June 5, 2006) - Before she was a two-time Academy Award®-winning film star, Sally Field became America's sweetheart as the lively novice nun with the astonishing ability to fly. Sally is back in the habit along with Madeleine Sherwood (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof), Shelley Morrison (TV's "Will & Grace"), Marge Redmond (Manhattan Murder Mystery), and Alejandro Rey (Moscow on the Hudson) when Sony Pictures Home Entertainment releases The Flying Nun: The Complete Second Season on DVD August 15. The beloved series will be available in a four-disc boxed collection featuring all 26 episodes from the second season. The set will be priced at $29.95 SLP.
In the mid-1960s, with the success of The Sound of Music and The Singing Nun, plus TV's interest in magical ladies ("Bewitched," "I Dream of Jeannie"), producers conceived a series that combined elements of each genre. The Flying Nun cast Field as Sister Bertrille, a postulate who upon arriving at Convent San Tanco in Puerto Rico, discovers the constant swirling winds combined with her diminutive size allow her to take flight (lift plus thrust equals flight). The alarming sight astounds the Mother Superior (Sherwood) and her fellow nuns, Sister Jacqueline (Redmond) and Sister Sixto (Morrison), and poor Sister Bertrille constantly finds herself in precarious yet humorous situations. Local playboy Carlos Ramirez (Rey) is frequently called upon to assist Sister Bertrille in her madcap adventures.
After The Flying Nun completed its three season, 83-episode run on ABC, Field garnered critical attention for her tour-de-force performance as a woman with multiple personalities in the TV miniseries "Sybil" (1976), winning an Outstanding Lead Actress Emmy® Award. She soon made the difficult transition to feature films, eventually winning the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of a union organizer in Norma Rae (1979). She won a second Academy Award for her stirring performance as a depression-era widow trying to keep her family together in Places in the Heart (1984). In 2001, Field won another Emmy as Outstanding Guest Actress for her recurring role on TV's long-running hit "ER."
The roster of familiar faces making guest appearances in the second season include Paul Lynde (TV's "Bewitched"), Jamie Farr (TV's "M*A*S*H"), Paul Peterson (TV's "The Donna Reed Show"), Gavin MacLeod (TV's "The Mary Tyler Moore Show"), Bernie Kopell (TV's "The Love Boat"), Alan Hale, Jr. (TV's "Gilligan's Island"), Dwayne Hickman (TV's "The Many Loves of Dobbie Gillis"), Harold Gould (The Sting, Freaky Friday), Ruta Lee (TV's "Perry Mason"), Elinor Donahue (TV's "Father Knows Best"), Abbe Lane (Wings of the Hawk), celebrity impressionist Rich Little and the last acting role by noted character actress Spring Byington (Academy Award nominee, You Can't Take It With You). The rock band The Sundowners ("Always You") also makes a guest appearance in one episode.
