A FOREIGN FIELD
As seen on Masterpiece Theatre
Acorn Media announces the Nov. 1, 2005, DVD release of the BBC drama A Foreign Field. Two British war vets (Alec Guinness and Leo McKern) meet an American vet (John Randolph) when all three return to Normandy on the 50th anniversary of D-Day. Old rivalries resurface in a comic subplot when two of the men discover they are searching for the same lost love (Jeanne Moreau). A lonely woman (Lauren Bacall) with her own painful but mysterious memories joins the group, while the American vet's petulant daughter (Geraldine Chaplin) and bumbling son-in-law (Edward Herrmann) struggle to keep up with the exploits of their elders. This disparate band of survivors eventually finds common ground in the memory of what they lost on that fateful day in 1944. DVD bonus features include D-Day facts and cast filmographies. Acorn's DVD single has a running time of 89 minutes and is priced at $24.99 SRP. Pre-book date is October 4.
Along with the stellar cast, A Foreign Field boasts involvement from two kingpins of classic British television, director Charles Sturridge and writer Roy Clarke. Sturridge has directed numerous British television dramas, many equally famous on both sides of the Atlantic. His credits include Brideshead Revisited, Longitude, and Shackleton. Roy Clarke's comedic writings include Last of the Summer Wine and Keeping Up Appearances, both of which have been long-time favorites with PBS viewers.
